Researching pronunciation learning strategies: An overview and a critical look

2018

Disparate goals that learners might have in learning second or foreign language pronunciation and the scant classroom time that can be dedicated to teaching this target language subsystem dictate that learner autonomy is of vital importance in this case and adept use of pronunciation learning strategies (PLS) can be viewed as key to the development of this attribute. Surprisingly, research on these strategies is scarce, mainly focusing on the identification and classification of PLS, diverse instruments are used for data collection and the findings are inconclusive. The paper provides an overview of the available research on PLS with respect to their identification, learners’ preferences co…

Pronunciation Learning Strategy Chains: A Qualitative Approach

2014

Language learning is a daunting process frequently enhanced by a number of factors, for example, language learning strategies deployed in an orchestrated manner (Oxford 1990). Similarly, pronunciation learning may be supported by effective strategies used either separately or in logically combined chains. However, little attention has been given so far to the strategies L2 learners employ when learning the target language pronunciation, not to mention pronunciation learning strategy chains. Hence, there have been a limited number of empirical investigations into pronunciation learning strategies (PLS) in general and in particular the ones following the qualitative design (cf. Bukowski 2004;…

Language learning strategies and teaching practices in adult L2 education : The case of Swedish for Immigrants

2019

This article highlights the use and co-construction of language learning strategies (LLS) in second language education for adults with short previous education. In a case study, we explore how LLS are used and co-constructed by one student and one teacher. The data for the article was created in an action research programme comprising two Swedish for Immigrants (SFI) schools, and the methodology used was classroom observation based in linguistic ethnography. In accordance with Griffiths (2013, p. 15) LLS are defined as “activities consciously chosen by learners for the purpose of regulating their own language learning”. For the analysis of LLS, Oxford’s (1990) taxonomy was chosen. In the ch…

A Survey of University Students’ Knowledge of Vocabulary Learning Strategies and Influential Factors in Middle East

2016

In this study, the most and the least common vocabulary learning strategies was explored among Eastern Mediterranean University international students. Besides, the role of personal factors such as gender and English proficiency level of students were considered. After distributing the questionnaire, the data were analyzed applying t-test and ANOVA. It was revealed that the level of importance of vocabulary learning strategy use was moderate for the EMU international students. Foreign Language Learners’ Pronunciation Learning Beliefs and Strategies

2021

This quantitative research investigates the extent to which adult L2 learners act in line with what they declare to believe in regarding pronunciation learning. In other words, this paper focuses on determining the strength of the relationship between the frequency of use of L2 pronunciation learning strategies (PLS) and the beliefs the individuals hold on selected factors affecting pronunciation acquisition, pronunciation instruction, self-efficacy, pronunciation learning goals and affective factors in pronunciation learning. A group of 116 learners of English as a foreign language who took an English phonetics course responded to the Pronunciation Learning Strategies Inventory (PLSI) and …

Decisional Procrastination in Academic Settings: The Role of Metacognitions and Learning Strategies

2017

Nowadays, university students suffer from a broad range of problems, such as educational underachievement or the inability to control themselves, that lead to procrastination as a consequence. The present research aimed at analyzing the determinants of decisional procrastination among undergraduate students and at assessing a path model in which self regulated learning strategies mediated the relationship between metacognitive beliefs about procrastination and decisional procrastination. 273 students from Southern Italy filled out a questionnaire composed by: the socio-demographic section, the Metacognitive Beliefs About Procrastination Questionnaire, the procrastination subscale of the Mel…

Vocabulary learning strategies employed by Finnish high school EFL students

2014

The language learning strategies of students at a University of Applied Sciences and how strategy use correlates with learning success

2017

Kielenoppimisstrategiat ovat keinoja, joita oppijat käyttävät ohjaamaan ja tehostamaan omaa oppimistaan. Oppimisstrategioiden monipuolisen käytön on havaittu vaikuttavan kielenoppimisen onnistumiseen. Oppimisstrategioiden käytössä on kuitenkin tärkeää, että oppijat osaavat soveltaa oikeaa oppimisstrategiaa eri oppimistilanteissa. Tämän takia on tärkeää, että oppijoita ohjataan strategioiden käytössä, jotta he kehittyvät omien strategioidensa arvioijina ja osaavat soveltaa strategioitaan. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää, millaisia oppimisstrategioita ammattikorkeakouluopiskelijat käyttävät, onko opiskelijoiden strategioiden käytön ja heidän menestyksensä pakollisella työelämän englanni…

Learning strategies in excellent and average university students. Their evolution over the first year of the career

2012

The aim of this paper was to analyze the evolution of learning strategies of two groups of students, excellent and average, from 11 degrees of the UPV (Valencia/Spain) in their freshman year. We used the CEVEAPEU questionnaire. The results confirmed the availability of better strategies of excellent students and also the existence of evolutionary patterns in which affective-emotional strategies decrease, such as value of the task or internal attributions, and that others increase, such as extrinsic motivation and external attributions. It seems that the student does not meet your expectations in the new context and professors have important responsibilities. El objetivo de este trabajo era …
